Those that have read Michael Morpurgo's novel, War Horse, might find the concept of adapting this sprawling war epic featuring a mounted cavalry impossible. However, writer Nick Stafford, directors Marianne Elliott and Tom Morris, and choreographer Toby Sedgwick have turned an impossible task into a celebrated West End and Broadway play. Part of the show's success is due to life-size horse puppets and others developed by the Handspring Puppet Company. The success of War Horse has been widely spread, as there are currently productions in London's West End, Broadway. While the play has not run long enough to develop a tour schedule in 2011, there will be touring productions coming soon.
War Horse is the story of young Albert and his beloved horse, Joey, whom he has cared for some time. Amidst the turmoil caused by the onset of WWI, Joey is sold to the British cavalry and is exposed to the horrors of war. Eventually, Joey is found and commissioned by the German army, where he learns that both sides of the war are suffering. However, as Joey fights for his life, Albert eventually undertakes a journey to rescue his friend and discovers the courage it takes to fight for what matters.
War Horse is currently playing at the New London Theatre in the West End, as well as the Vivian Beaumont Theatre on Broadway. A production is scheduled to open at the Princess of Wales Theatre in Toronto in February 2012, though not many other details are available yet. While there will be no War Horse tour dates in 2011, a US tour will begin in June of 2012 that is sure to delight audiences around the country. For those that have the opportunity to see War Horse in the West End or on Broadway, don't waste it and buy your tickets today.
